I have recently read the book ‘Hummingbird’ by Natalie Lloyd. This book is one of my favorite books of all time. It is about an 11 year old girl named Olive who lives in Tennessee, and she has a disease called Osteogenesis Imperfecta (Brittle bones). If she falls down just a little, she will break her bone. She really doesn’t have any friends because of being homeschooled, so she persuades her family to let her go to 6th grade; But only if she is careful. She then goes to school in her wheelchair, with her stepbrother. Olive meets a girl named Grace, and they become best friends. They both have one mission though; finding a magical, wish-granting hummingbird. Combining Olives knowledge about birds, and Grace’s knowledge about business, they both go on search for the hummingbird. But her stepbrother, Hatch, knows something mysterious about the hummingbird, which he looks for every night that Olive doesn’t know.
I think that this is a 5 star book with a simple, thrilling plot. There are around 10 characters, and is recommended for tweens. I love reading books about disabled kids and how they feel and survive, such as in the books ‘Insignificant Events In The Life Of A Cactus’ , and ‘Out of My Bowl’. (I’ll review those in another post.) This book was inspiring and told me that we should be grateful for what we have, because even some people live without walking, or having people talk behind their backs about being disabled.
I felt really bad for Olive because she had a dream of acting in the school play, but her disability held her back, leaving the director in complicated thoughts if Olive should get the role. But I totally recommend this book!
