I love books, and have read so many! A lot of times, I cant decide a book to read, so I search up a good book. Well, in this guide, here are 20 amazing books you must read. These book are recommended for 5th and 6th graders, and if you read these, you will be wowed by the literature details and how the author really puts you in the story.

Out of My Mind by Sharon Draper

This is the most heartbreaking and emotional story of an 11 year old girl named Melody who cannot move or talk and this creates so many challenges in school for her. For example, the quiz team, which she dedicated all her time to… well, it didn’t turn out very well just because of her disability. But she can do something amazing; she has photographic memory, can see sounds, hear colors, and has the most intelligent, creative mind in the world. But nobody notices. I really love this book, and how the feelings really get to you!

Ground Zero by Alan Gratz

Ground Zero is a novel about the 9/11 incident. It is a historical fiction, so it has elements of fiction merged in with real events. There are two children from different sides of the world showcased her; Brandon, who is in one of the Twin Towers and is trying to escape, and Reshmina from present day Afghanistan, who’s twin brother desires to join the Taliban for revenge on the USA, even though the family is giving hostage to a US soldier. It is filled with so much excitement, tears, and I just love how Gratz really puts in the elements to put to in their shoes, both forgiving and dreadful.

Insignificant Events In The Life of a Cactus by Dusti Bowling

This is the exciting adventure of a girl named Aven Green, who was born without arms. She can do things with her feet very well, however. But she faces a lot of discrimination at school. Nobody wants to sit with her, and she is SO UNDERRATED! Luckly, Connor comes in to help, and he has a disease which makes him bark, so nobody wants to be his friend eather. It is a cool and funny mystery of her own family, because she is adopted. She learns so much about what her real power is inside, so maybe you might discover your own!

Hummingbird by Natalie Lloyd

Olive is a brave girl with Osteogenesis Imperfecta (brittle bone disease), so if she falls, she can break her bones severely. Her biggest dream is to attend middle school, but her parents are very worried about her. But she proves them wrong, and attends middle school. A girl named Grace has asthma, but they team up to find a mysterious hummingbird that is said to grant a wish! Will Olive wish for herself to be normal, or wish for someone else? This story is so exciting, you can’t stop reading!

All The Answers by Kate Messner

This book is favorable for its humor. Ava finds a magical pencil that can talk, but only to her. It can give facts, answers, … and scary things about Ava’s family. Every time she uses it though, the pencil becomes smaller and smaller. Is it really ok to know everything, or are some things meant to be hidden until real? This is a funny, and imaginative story that you’ll just keep laughing about!

Comet Rising by MarcyKate Connolly

Emmeline and Lucas were born on the year of a Cerelia comet; and that comet gives the two magical powers. Emmeline is a Shadow Weaver, so she can move and summon shadows, while Lucas can control light. The comet has somehow crossed the sky 12 years early, so the evil Lady Aisling has controlled the minds of other magical people. The duo must save the world, but may get trapped in the hands of the witch! I could not stop reading, and was so pumped up about what the friends will do!

The Beatryce Prophecy by Kate DeCamillo

This book is very underrated! It starts out a bit… lame, but this book had a climax so beautiful, even though the first character we hear about is a goat. A princess named Beatryce is harmed by the deadly king, while her own mother is in jail. Her new friends around the forest try to bring her back to her home. But something very, very mysterious is that she can read and write, even though she has lost her memory.

Iceberg by Jennifer A Nielsen

This book is based off the Titanic ship, where a poor girl named Hazel Rothbury must travel to the USA to make money. But her mother doesn’t give her enough money for a ticket, so she sneaks on the ship. With the help of Charlie, a young crew member, and Sylvia, a kind, rich girl who helps keep Hazels secret. She is a 3rd class passenger, but occasionally sneaks to the 2nd and 1st class decks. She studies the ship, and how it can protect itself. She dreams to be journalist. But will her life last?

The Replacement by Lindsey Duga

The Replacement is about a girl named Erin Dodgeson, who moves into a new house. But her backyard has a treehouse, and not a nice one. She falls off the treehouse, is blamed for things she didn’t do, and is being controlled by the ghost of Patty, who died in that house and had made a promise with her sister Paula that they would play together. But Patty might control her whole life. This book is a book to scream about. You must read this!

Mine by Delilah S Dawson

Mine is such a good book! It is creepy and gives you real chills. It is a horror story about Lily who moves into a new house, but she hates it! It is messed up, slimey, and full of memories left from 2 people who died in the house. One of them was a little girl who is hurting Lily’s friends and wants her stuff back that Lily had taken from her.

Ablaze by Christopher Krovatin

Aly is a mysterious and lonely girl, who thinks she has fire powers. Her powers can help her stop bullies… or hurt people like her family. But she might not be the one controlling her powers. This story is actually a bit sad, but I love how Aly’s personality is so different and unique from everyone else!

The Blue Umbrella by Ruskin Bond

This book is old, but still really good! World famous author Ruskin Bond shares a fun, short story about a village girl from Uttarakhand named Binya, who trades her tiger claw necklace for a royal blue unbrella for the rich. The whole village is jealous, especially a shop owner, who is trying to steal it. Will honesty or jealousy rule? This book is good to read before sleeping because it’s short and calming.

Haunt Me by K.R. Alexander

This book is another favorite horror. Maria must overcome the death of her twin sister Isabella. She and her friends try to contact her with Ouija boards and summoning, but a strange, fishy ghost contacts them first. She wants her hate and hurt them, but it might not actually be her sister.

Momentous Events In the Life Of a Cactus by Dusti Bowling

This is the second book of the Aven Green novels. Aven reaches high school, her best friend Connor moves away, and so much friend drama blocks her journey. She gets bullied, makes new friends, and tries to discover more about her birth family. She already discovered her mom but may… or may not discover her dad! She is saving lives also! This is a huge adventure that you must read!!!
